Number of Animals Used

About Number of Animals Used

Information

Body

One of OACM's functions is to keep track of the number of animals used on each Protocol. This figure is reported to the IACUC on an annual basis, a few months before the Continuing Review expires. You can get these numbers at any time by looking at the Animal Approvals section of VOS for each Protocol.

How is this number calculated?

Body

Animals are counted as used when they are added to the protocol by these methods:

  • Animal Orders The number of animals requested on Animal Order Forms count towards Animals Used.
  • Animal Transfers Animals being transferred to a new Protocol will count towards Animals Used for that new Protocol. Please note:
    • If the animals being transferred were used in any way on the previous Protocol, they will continue to count towards the previous Protocol as well as the new Protocol.
    • If the animals being transferred were NOT used in any way on the previous Protocol, their number will be subtracted from the Animals Used count for the previous Protocol.
  • Census The total number of weans on Census Cards is added to the Animals Used Count.
  • Imports

REMINDER: None of the information in the + Cages, - Cages, and Transfers +/- columns on Census Cards counts directly towards the Animals Used count.
