Pharmaceuticals used in live animals should be procured through the OACM Pharmacy. Commonly used drugs, such as isoflurane and physiological fluids, are generally in stock at all times. To place an order or to discuss options for your protocol please email VetTech@med.uvm.edu or call (802) 656-8708.

The OACM Pharmacy is located in Given C024 and is open daily from Monday through Friday, 7:30 - 11:30 AM and 12:30 - 4:00 PM.

Controlled Substances

Investigators requiring the use of controlled substances in their research with animals must apply for a Researcher's Registration with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).   • Dispose of drugs when they have reached their expiration date. Expired drugs may be picked up by Environmental Safety during chemical pick-ups.
  • Unless specifically approved by the IACUC, all drugs used in live animals must be pharmaceutical grade (USP).
  • Fluids, such as physiological saline or lactated Ringer's solution, should be dated when the container is first used and discarded no more than 30 days later.
